Genoa, often overshadowed by its more famous Italian counterparts like Rome and Venice, boasts a deep and fascinating history as a major maritime power. The city's historical center is a labyrinth of narrow streets called 'caruggi' that open up to picturesque squares and reveal treasures like the magnificent Genoa Cathedral, the Royal Palace, and numerous quaint, local shops and eateries. The Porto Antico, or Old Port, is a vibrant area, spectacularly revamped by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano. Here, you can enjoy the aquarium, the largest in Italy, and several museums. Genoa's coastline is dotted with splendid beaches and promenades, making it perfect for leisurely walks or a day by the sea. The best months to visit Genoa are from April to October, when the weather is warm and pleasant, with July and August being the peak tourist season due to excellent beach weather. The winter months, particularly November to February, can be cold and wet, thus less ideal for enjoying outdoor activities.
