Uyuni sits at 3,656 meters (12,000 feet) elevation on the Altiplano, surrounded by dramatic salt flats, flamingo lakes, and volcano-studded desert landscape. The town is primarily visited as a 2–4 day basecamp for Salar de Uyuni tours; few nomads stay longer than necessary due to limited amenities, harsh weather, and isolation. The broader region offers stunning natural attractions—mirror-like salt flats during the wet season (December–March), stark white expanses and high-contrast photography during the dry season (May–October)—but Uyuni town itself has minimal restaurants, unreliable services, and a frontier feel that appeals only to adventure travelers. The best time to visit is May–October (dry season) when roads are passable and the salt flat is navigable; December–March brings rain that transforms the salt into a mirror but makes access difficult and tours less frequent. Worst months are June–August, when extreme cold (often dropping below freezing at night) and altitude sickness affect many visitors.
